Sat-nav technology, which calculates driver speeds to sail through green traffic lights is to be trialled in Newcastle. PICTURE shows John Watson of Tyne & Wear's high tech Urban Traffic Management Control (UMTC) centre at Newcastle University, which will be used in the sat-nav traffic light system. STORY about the revolutionary 10m Euro Compass4D project which has been designed to take the frustration out of the rush hour commute by suggesting speeds for the driver to keep to. For example, it may suggest a driver to travel at 24 miles-an-hour, to ensure they hit the next four lights on green, which in turn will help reduce overall road congestion.
